Eden Valley

South Australia’s beautiful Eden Valley, known as the garden of grapes and gums, is one of Australia’s premier cool climate wine regions characterised by its rugged beauty and varied topography.

Eden Valley was named by the surveyors of the area after they found the word "Eden" carved into a tree.  The beautiful rolling hills of the region create a natural diversity in mesoclimate determined by altitude, aspect and slope, which also naturally impacts the soil type.  It is therefore critical to match the correct grape variety and site. Overall the region is characterised by cooler conditions than its famous neighbour, the Barossa Valley, and as such the final stages of ripening and harvesting take place in cooler temperatures.

The number of wineries in Eden Valley is small but the region has a significant influence on Australian winemakers. Eden Valley's signature varieties are Riesling and Shiraz, however it also produces Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon, Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot.

Eden Valley wines are distinctive in their character, displaying wonderful aromatics, elegance, complexity and finesse.

HISTORY

Eden Valley shares a proud German heritage with it's neighbour the Barossa Valley, collectively known as the Barossa region. English and German immigrants settled here in the early to mid-19th century, establishing the township in the 1860s.

With a wine making history dating back to 1847, Eden Valley is home to some of the world’s oldest Shiraz and Riesling vineyards. Traditional grape growing continues with a focus on sustainability and authenticity, with fifth and sixth generations of the original settlers still working in their family businesses today. 

LEGENDARY WINEMAKERS

Mountadam Winery was built in 1972 by David Wynn. David was a legend of the Australian wine industry. He recognised the cool climate potential of an area he called "High Eden". His Chardonnay helped pioneer the variety in Australia.
